It was my friend’s birthday recently. I took a candle, pressed his doorbell, and surprised him with a bun. It wasn’t a birthday cake. It was like a small ball of bread. I stuck a candle on top of a bun and shouted, “Happy Birthday!”
It was goofy.
But when I took a step back, I realised that was the goofiest thing I did for the past 6 years. Ever since I started studying social work, I stopped being goofy. After all, it gets to you. When you’re hearing problems everyday, you wonder if you should even be happy. After all, the whole
world is gloomy.
You don’t have to quit your job to be goofy. Just remember two things.
Firstly, remind yourself - ‘life doesn’t have to be so serious.’
Secondly, do something that’s less serious. You need to do something. Because it can end up being a mental concept, without working out through your actions. Whether that be something silly like
- dancing to a ‘dumb’ song for a minute
- laughing at something stupid you did during the day
- making a joke with someone you meet (even if it fails horribly)
Do it. You realise yourself finding the brighter side of life.

I am going to keep having fun every day I have left, because there is no other way of life. You just have to decide whether you are a Tigger or an Eeyore.” – Randy Pausch

One quick way to rediscover your sense of fun is to play a group game with kids.
Over the past 2 weeks, I’ve been kicking soccer in my local neighbourhood with kids. Just having that sense of play, with people, can help you see that life is less serious than it needs to be.
