2-3-4 Friday - why we don’t like our
jobs

This week, I was listening to the CEO of a fund management company speak.
A question was asked of him,
When do you
quit?
Interestingly,
his answer was,
Someone once told me an answer I remembered, “when you’re no longer needed by the market.”
But I want to add to that. I think its when you’re not missed.
That was in the context of entrepreneurship and starting a business. But I think it applies to those of us who
may be working with an organisation.
When you’re not missed.
If you find yourself clocking in and out, feeling like you’re just a cog in the wheel, then it may be time for you to start thinking about whether its time to leave.
Because most of us hope to do work that engages us and makes us feel alive. But some of us may feel that may not work, especially when we are responsible for a family.
Interestingly, he also talked about what kept him going.
I don’t have the luxury to be
tired.
As a cofounder,
with people depending on him to put food on their tables, he knew that he couldn’t afford to mop around and cry.
So maybe today, it’s helpful to think of it this way.
- An ideal scenario of work is that you love what you do, and you’re contributing significantly to what’s happening in the company.
- But when that doesn’t happen, then it helps to think about how work may sometimes give you and your family food on the table, and how that’s fulfilling enough.

Do you know your expectations of work?
1 tip
Part of the misconception to work, I think, is that we need to everything
out of work. But that’s not physically possible.
Is it?
Just list
your expectations of work.
- I want to be happy.
- I want to earn money.
- I want to grow at my job.
These may sometimes come into conflict, and the key is to realise that not everything needs to come from work. You could get happiness from the weekend, or the
nights.
The key is to know your
expectations of work, and how you might meet those expectations outside of them.
