2-3-4 Friday: When you think you are better
than others

Deep down, you know it. You’re better than others.
There, I’ve said it.
No need to hide it, no need to feel sheepish about it.
We’ve all been there.
When you sit in front of your boss, and wonder how he got into the position he’s in, when he doesn’t seem to understand how best to move forward.
When you see your colleague who’s been promoted, but you’ve performed better than him.
Or when you hear your manager telling you
to do better, and you simply don’t understand what it is about your work that’s been ‘poor’.
It can suck to be in that position. You feel stuck. You feel stifled. You feel stumped in your attempts to move things forward.
The worst thing?
You just don’t understand why others, like your boss or your colleagues, see you as the troublemaker, the deviant person, when you’re just trying to do your best to improve things.
You just feel misunderstood.
Gosh. That sucks.
I don’t have a ready solution.
Except to tell you that even though I don’t fully understand what you’re going through, I’ve been there. Our experiences may not be entirely alike.
But there may be similarities. In my first ever job, I suggested cloud
solutions to the operations manager, and promptly had her beating me away.
A year later, they implemented the exact solution I suggested.
Two things I will say about the times when you feel like you are better than others.
Don’t feel bad about it.
Own it.
Second thing? Find a boss that actually sees you as better than him.
That way, he will trust you to make the fix, to own the whole solution, rather than trying to shoehorn you into a place in the organisation.

Maybe others just aren’t as good as you, and that’s a fact. No need to feel bad about feeling this way.
1 tip
I will admit. It’s not going to be easy to be in a place where you feel stymied.
If you’ve had every conversation possible with your boss about greater latitude and flexibility, then leave. There’s no other way around it.
