It’s 617PM. I’ve just
finished an interview. It’s 71 Robinson Road, one of the prime office districts in Singapore.
I walk across the marbled tiles, and at the corner of my eye, I see a glass meeting room. There’s women within, with nicely coifed hair, in power suits, and there’s a panel of 3 members within.
Around them, there are young adults, listening intently.
Then it strikes me.
I could be there.
No, scratch that.
I should be there.
Being a ‘high-po’, being on an accelerated career paths, being wined and dined, like I mattered.
To someone. Something.
Then it dawns on me.
That for much of our lives as working adults, we crave for a place where we belong.
Where we can become someone.
Where we can believe in something.
Sometimes, we find ourselves on the outside, looking in, because we dip our toes here and there, not fully giving of ourselves to where we are.
That shows. In the communities we are in,
whether that be at work, or in the family, or elsewhere, we may not give everything.
We don’t participate in ‘citizenship behaviours’, that may involve going above and beyond. Taking initiative to keep the chairs. Or get the tea. Volunteer your time.
So my encouragement today is,
What would your community look like, if you gave everything you had to be part of the group?

Better communities start from you.
1 tip
Because I think it’s very easy to take for granted the communities we are in.
Like church. Or the morning breakfast club. Or the tea group you have.
When you don’t give anything to it, expecting someone to organise the next meeting, to arrange the next date, it becomes tiring for the person who’s always taking the initiative.
One day, if he gives up, your group will die a slow death.
All it takes is just for one person to feel tired.
That will be the start of the decay.
So if you could, don’t ask if you can help. Just help.
Better communities start from you.
