In 2018, I worked with an orphanage that took in abandoned children.
They had often been found in rubbish dumps, street corners, or on door steps.
Many had been found with mild disabilities like cleft lips, cerebral palsy, or cognitive difficulties.
I wondered what it felt like to be abandoned. So one afternoon, somewhat insensitively, I asked one teen,
Do you miss Mummy?
No, I don’t.
I thought I heard wrongly and so I asked again.
Do you miss mummy?
No, I don’t. Because I have friends
and family here.
Later when I went to his room,
all he had was a teddy bear on his bed, and a suitcase under his bed.
In the eyes of the world, he had nothing.
But in his eyes, he had everything.
Because he had friends and family.
Maybe this boy has something to teach us. That very often, we chase after the experiences people tell us are great - fancy holidays, good jobs…
But then we forget that what we want, may not be what we need.
And maybe what we need are relationships that matter.
1 talk
Sometimes we chase experiences we want, without realising that what we need are relationships.
1 tip
Give some thought to the relationships you have in your life.
Draw two columns, one for what your prioritise, and the other for where you’re spending the most time at.
It may look like that:
What I prioritise
- God
- Family
- Work
Where I spend the most time
- Work
- Movies
- Soccer
What might need to change for you to have better relationships?
