Are you pretending to be an
adult?
Over the past week in Japan, I became a completely different person. The quiet, introspective, and reflective person was suddenly doing things like:
- Cheering (loudly) after every presentation
- Teasing the person beside me
- Shouting ‘SU-GO-I!!!’ after
another youth presented
And it made me think a lot about how sometimes, we are pretending to be adults.
Yup. You didn't read that wrong. Pretending to be.
You know…
The time when we use big words in meetings even though we barely understand what they mean. Or the
time when we dress up. Or when we deepen our voice so that we can sound more mature.
There is a place for that.
But we just need to know that there is also a young, playful, fun side of you that’s also longing to come out.
Uncovering that playful side of you can help us to be much, much better
people. Not just worker bees, but people with emotions.

How are you discovering the little child in you again? Where are the places where that child reappears?
Tell me about it.
1 tip
Take time to ask yourself,
What was I like as a child?
How have I changed as an adult?
Sure, there are responsibilities that you have to take care of now that might necessitate your need to step up and be more mature.
That doesn’t
have to come at the cost of joy, fun, and laughter.
Why do we have to be so stiff and buttoned up all the time?
Why not try a dance class sometime? It was an experience that helped me learn to (at least) hold a lady's hand without perspiring profusely.
You might be surprised at just what you find.
