Are you happy?
No?
Try to be happy then.
You didn’t read that wrong.
I didn’t hear that wrong either, though I thought I probably did.
On 19 October, I was at an event hearing
Marshall Goldsmith speak. He asked everyone in the audience to seriously ask themselves,
Everyday, did you try your best to:
be happy
get engaged
find meaning?
I thought he was
crazy.
How can you try to be happy? Isn’t it something dependent on your circumstance?
Else, if you were happy everyday, people might think you were loony.
It’s easy to not think about happiness because we think it’s on the complete flip side of the driven, professional
we are supposed to be. We think that we are supposed to be sour-faced and serious, not happy and jumpy.
But why not just try it? Having fun with your job.
Look for the simple joys and wins, rather than the places which make you think,
Gosh this is stupid and
dumb.
We can all be happy, if we tried.

“Happiness is the consequence of personal effort. You fight for it, strive for it, insist upon it, and sometimes even travel around the world looking for it.
You have to
participate relentlessly in the manifestations of your own blessings.
And once you have achieved a state of happiness, you must never become lax about maintaining it. You must make a mighty effort to keep swimming upward into that happiness forever, to stay afloat on top of it.”
― Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat, Pray, Love

Okay here’s something practical.
If you were going through a hard day, maybe take some time to ask yourself,
Okay. How might I be happier for the rest of today?
When
you look for happiness, you tend to find it. If you don’t, well, you don’t.
Here's a question:
Are you trying to be happy?
