For the social workers amongst us,
Happy social worker day!
And for those who aren't, there are still lessons we can learn from this noble profession.
One social worker who
impacted me was my previous colleague Chin Bee. As an organisation, we were struggling with different warring factions.
Some stopped talking to others. Others tried to get their colleague sacked. One manager would openly share about her colleague’s mistakes through email to her boss, whilst copying other colleagues.
Yes, it wasn’t nice to look
at.
But Chin Bee, with her unflappable attitude, constantly strived to bring people closer together.
For Valentine’s, she would get us cupcakes. When she went out, she would usually ask if we wanted to get something.
Her example reminds me that social work, often isn’t just about the client, but
about the colleagues you work with, and the organisation you work within.
Social work is contextual.
Often in social work we hear this saying,
it’s not the clients that are the problem.
It’s the colleagues who
are.
This social work day, I want to thank you for reading over the past year.
Here’s a gift for you - the book we designed for social workers, to
- Overcome the administrative burden of social work, quicker, and faster
- Manage tensions with colleagues
- Work with difficult clients
I think you will enjoy it.
If you think someone else could benefit from it, forward this email to them.
