Understand, unlock and unleash your unique potential
Each week, we introduce one talk to help you understand more about your potential; one thought to unlock your potential; and one tip you can take to unleash your potential for the good of our world.
One talk to understand
When told that his new commander-in-chief, General Grant, was fond of alcohol, President Lincoln said, ‘If I knew his brand, I’d send a barrel or so to some other generals.’
On the surface, this sounds strange. Why would Lincoln ignore Grant’s weakness to alcohol? But as Drucker argues in The Effective Executive, Lincoln focused on Grant’s strength in winning battles. Lincoln began looking less at one’s weaknesses. Lincoln’s turn to appointments based on strengths, rather than well-roundedness, marked the turning point
in the Civil War.
One thought to unlock
Very often, we try to focus on improving our weaknesses, rather than ampliflying our strengths. At appraisals, we are told about our weaknesses and asked to work on them. We are encouraged to be well-rounded. But as the cliché goes, a jack
of all trades is a master of none, we too become ineffective when we try to be good at everything, rather than being good at one thing.
One tip to unleash
Today, ask yourself: What is one thing I’m good at? What is the one thing I do better than everyone else? What is the one thing that is so special about me?
Then focus on that one thing.
