Teabags are pretty amazing, aren’t they?
I mean, a small teabag can turn a big pot of boiling water into tea.
How can you be a teabag at work? You might be the most junior member of your team. You might not have the most authority. Can you still have influence within the team you are in?
Yes.
Here’s how.
Lead from the bottom.
If you want something done, do it yourself. Make it your personal responsibility to get it completed. Don’t expect someone else to do it. Don’t ask someone else to do it.
Don’t expect someone to help you.
Just do it yourself.
If you have a good idea, start it.
Here’s a secret. You don’t have to ask for permission. Ask for forgiveness instead. If your boss asks you why you are doing this, say, ‘Oh sorry, I didn’t know this would be a problem.’
You can blame it on your lack of experience in the sector. When you’re junior, bosses can be more forgiving.
If you see a problem, solve it.

You might think, okay…so how do I find the motivation to do this?
Each day, celebrate the progress you do at work. This keeps you focused on progress, rather than perfection. Here’s a habit I use.
Every day, at the end of the day, at 9pm, I sit down with my diary. I write down 2 things I’m proud of achieving and 1 thing I can improve on.
- Good - Tuned into my client’s needs, listening to her, rather than interrupting her
- Good - Focused on my writing in the morning, and left my email until 1pm!
- To improve – Was multitasking whilst in a virtual meeting. Could have taken a deep breath whenever I felt like multitasking, and focused better.
