‘Seeking to spark your greatest potential with every word’

You’ve probably watched an inspirational speech by the likes of Steve Jobs, telling you to follow your passion. Cue the dramatic music, and a moment of enlightenment. Suddenly you realise what you were put on this earth for.
Often, this doesn’t happen.
Following your passion is probably the worst thing you can ever do for yourself. You might only end up disappointed, upset, and aggrieved. You thought passion equals happiness.
No, it doesn’t.
Why?
You might think of passion as a painkiller. But it’s a vitamin. This means that it’s good-to-have, but not a must-have. The better thing is to develop your skills instead.
Your skills are unique to you. Different people are gifted at different things. Similarly, you are the same. You, too, are gifted at different things. Find that gift you have. Develop it.
Stop pursuing passion, select skill instead.

Don't follow your passion but let it follow you in your quest to get really good at what you do.

You might wonder, ‘But how do I know what skills I have?’ For an in-depth understanding, you can read Richard Bolles’ What Colour is Your Parachute, and go through the Flower Exercise he has created. But here’s an adaptation of his Flower
Exercise.
Write down 5 different achievements that you are proud of. This can range from winning a prize at the science fair, to organising a solo road trip.
Then, write down the skills you used to achieve them. Here’s an example.
- Teaching the university’s public speaking module – speaking, teaching and planning
- Publishing a letter on a major newspaper – writing
- Getting a first-class honours degree – writing
Try that. You will start understanding `yourself better. More importantly, you begin to know the skills you love to use, and the skills you might not be that good at using.
Think others might benefit? I’m counting on you.
