‘Seeking to spark the most potential within you per word of any online newsletter’

I must confess.
I used to be an addict. A phone addict. I would scroll through Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp all day. I would get anxious if I didn’t bring my phone out.
But one day, as I was lying in my room in Nottingham, the sun was shining. People were laughing outside in the cool autumn. I thought to myself: was this how I was going to spend the rest of my life?
Cooped up with social media whilst the world was waiting at my doorstep?
I realised something needed to change. I started to track the amount of time I spent on my phone.
I was shocked.
I spent an average of 3 hours and 47 minutes on my phone each day. Really?!
As a social worker, I would refer someone immediately for help if they told me that the first thing they did everyday was to pick up alcohol. Or if throughout the day, they would start feeling anxious without alcohol with them. Or if they couldn’t go to
sleep without alcohol on their bedside.
Now substitute the word ‘alcohol’ with ‘phone’.
Get what I mean?
It’s perfectly okay if your phone accelerates your productivity. But it’s not okay if it becomes the focus of your attention, pushing you to put aside your family, friends, and loved ones.
Here’s a simple test: in the morning, do you touch your phone within 5 minutes of waking up?
It might be time to reconsider your relationship with your phone.

“Tech isn’t morally good or bad until it’s wielded by the corporations that fashion it for mass consumption. Apps and platforms can be designed to promote rich social connections; or, like cigarettes, they can be designed to addict. Today, unfortunately, many tech developments do
promote addiction.”

Change starts with knowledge.
Knowing how much time you spend on your phone gives you the power to decide whether that’s something you can or want to continue living with. There are simple apps available to track the amount of screen time you have. Moment for iPhones, and QualityTime
for Android.
There is no judgment here. No one will judge you for using 3 hours 47 minutes on your phone each day.
But time spent on your phone is time not spent elsewhere. On your dreams. On your relationships. On your life.
Are you okay with that?
P.S. If you needed to know the math, I now spend an average of 17 minutes a day on my phone. That’s saving 3 hours 35 minutes a day. Multiply that by 365 days, and that amounts to 53.2 days.
