‘Seeking to unleash the greatest potential within you per word of any online newsletter’
1 thought
So, you want to be the next CEO?
In my first appraisal, my bosses were sharing with me ‘3-shalls’. ‘You shall answer your phone. You shall reply in acknowledgement to information given. You shall indicate your attendance for all meetings.’ At that point, I thought it was ridiculous. Why didn’t you talk about my performance? Why were you talking about
my presence online and offline?
Later, after reading Botelho and Powell’s book ‘The CEO Next Door’ (highly recommended!), I realised why.
In their study of 2600 leaders, they found only one overlapping trait that determined the final ascent to the CEO position.
Reliability. They did what they said they were going to do. Whilst this sounds basic, it’s not. Think back to the last time you failed to execute on time, on budget, on benefit. Yes, there were a million reasons why. But the underlying fact is still the same. You didn’t do what you said you were going to
do.
To you, it is a small thing. To others, it shows.
That when you are entrusted with something, you might not meet it. And that’s not CEO material.
What then?
I summarised them here.
1 quote
CEOs who are known for being reliable are fifteen times more likely to be high-performing, and their odds of getting hired are twice that of others.

I’m sorry if I sounded mean. This newsletter isn’t supposed to be nice. It’s supposed to push you (and I!) to action.
Today, if you’re entrusted with a task, make sure it gets done. First, be sure about what the expectations are. 2 questions are helpful.
- What does done look like? (Credits to Brené Brown’s Rising Strong)
- What would be a great job?
Ensure diabolical follow-through. Here's how.
If you’re on a team, success doesn’t depend on you. That’s when you take it on your shoulders to ensure follow-through. Get the basic things right. In meetings, take down minutes. Ensure that the task list after is clear for all and shared with
all.
Sound simple?
Time to get cracking.
Read how you can apply the lessons to accelerate your
own career too!
And I'd love to hear your questions and feedback, so let me know your thoughts in the comments
below.
Think others might benefit? I’m counting on you.
