‘Seeking to spark your greatest potential with every word’
1 thought
I look at the laptop. The eye of the webcam stares back at me. I stare back.
I don’t feel like writing today. In fact, I don’t even feel like doing anything today.
I’m not motivated.
Can’t be bothered. Too much effort. Nah.
Some days, you feel like this. You turn up for another day of work, flip open the laptop, and … you just don’t wish to work. Just not today.
How do you motivate yourself when you are too tired to continue?
Here’s a thought.
Stop trying to motivate yourself.
Start doing the work.
Many times, we think that we need motivation before the work to be hyped up about what we do. But the truth is that motivation starts after the work, not before. Think of it as pushing a stone over a hill. Initially, it’s difficult. But once we get it over the hill, it gathers its own
momentum, and rolls of its own accord. The stone wouldn’t move if you didn’t do anything.
Similarly, the stone is like your work.
Expecting yourself to rock and roll at your work, without doing anything, is like looking at a stone and expecting it to move.
Today, motivation starts after you work, not before.

People often say that motivation doesn’t last. Well, neither does bathing – that is why we recommend it daily.

To overcome the initial resistance to working, ask yourself: what’s the smallest action I can take to start work? For example, I tell myself each morning, that come what may, I will just sit on my chair, open my laptop and start typing for 5 minutes. Even if all that comes out is
NONSENSE.
It helps me to begin the momentum.
What’s the smallest action for you to start your stone rolling?
If you needed more practical steps, here are 5 ways you can build your resilience, to bounce back
from unmotivating days :)
