‘Seeking to spark your greatest potential with every word’

‘John, let’s face it. You’re not very well-liked…
By most.’
Fortunately, the mute button over Zoom disguised the sound of my heart breaking into a million pieces. That afternoon was the review of my Performance
Improvement Plan (PIP). If you’re not familiar with what that is, it’s a get better or get sacked plan. You’re in trouble. There’s clear actions you need to follow. Step out of line, and you’re ushered out.
For months after that, I told myself, “I’m not here to be liked. Judge me on what I get done!”Who cares about being well-liked anyway?
But for the past few days, I’ve been thinking. What if being less well-liked was undermining my effectiveness? I was doing a lot, but I couldn’t say that I was effective. In fact, it seemed like no one was catching on with my
ideas.
I didn’t seem to have a problem with my ‘hard’ skills… but my soft skills seemed to be lacking.
Working with both Gen Z (those born between 1995 to 2002), and the managers who supervise them, I often hear common concerns.
These millennials… they don’t seem to respect authority! They are always on their phones! They are really smart… but they can’t seem to do the basics – like dress professionally, turn up punctually, or sit in meetings without
multitasking.
Do you have a soft skills gap? I don’t wish a PIP on you. Look at it, or risk getting sacked
You can read my latest article on what it is, and how you can overcome
it.

I've asked tens of thousands of managers: “How much do these so-called ‘soft skills’ matter?” The answer is nearly universal: Soft skills matter a lot. The cliché is that people are hired because of their hard skills but people are fired because of their soft
skills.

- What do people often bring up as your biggest weakness?
- What have you done to address that? Has it worked?
Do you think the soft skill gap is that important? Let me know what you think.
