‘Seeking to spark your greatest potential with every word’
1 thought
I used to want a promotion. Very badly. I would ask my supervisor: how do I get promoted? How do I get valued in this organisation? I would volunteer for every committee. I would suggest initiatives.
But when others got promoted over me, I started to reflect on what was going wrong. I realised that people who were promoted were those who could follow instructions, conform, and not rock the boat.
Everything I wasn’t.
You might say, ‘Oh John, this sounds like a classic case of sour grapes. Just because you can’t get promoted, you end up criticising everyone who is.’
Maybe.
Getting promoted reveals that you are a good employee. But what does it reveal about you being a good employer?
Nothing.
Getting promoted shows that you are good at conforming. But what does it reveal about you creating?
Nada.
Getting promoted demonstrates that you are climbing the corporate ladder. But what does it reveal about you climbing the ladder of life?
Zilch.
Maybe you think getting a promotion will increase your enthusiasm at work (here's 9 better ways). Or improve your passion and perseverance. Or overcome your exhaustion at work.
You might think that getting a promotion is the be-all or end-all. But it’s not. It’s about what you value. If you value your career progression, that may be the best thing. But if other things are more important to you – your family, your relationships, your work-life balance, then it might
not.
Ultimately, the point is not that promotions are bad or that you shouldn’t go for them. But it’s that promotions shouldn’t, and should never be the only way you celebrate the work you
do.
Celebrating the work you do starts from within.

1 tip
To remind yourself of the progress you are making each day, write down two things you are proud of, and what thing you can improve on. For example,
- Glad that I took the time to have dinner with my family!
- Spent time exercising and taking care of my health today!
- Felt that I could have focused less on my phone today
