6 weeks into the year, how
are you doing? Chances are, you’re already overwhelmed. In whatever job you’re on, you’re probably in a place where you’re thinking,
Gosh. There’s so much to do. Not enough time to do it.
Where do I start?
The conventional advice is to be more productive. Use another hack that will
make you more productive.
The more
unconventional advice, which I’ve shared on this column before as well, is
start a stop-doing list.
But often what I think we can often miss is this.
Having pause moments.
So when things are flying by, and you feel like you cannot keep up, the solution isn’t to go faster.
What can help is just taking a step out of the fast lane, filtering down to the slow lane, and then taking a step to look at what you’ve done over the past 6 weeks of the year.
What am I proud of?
Because the danger of having work, is feeling that you’ve not done much work.
What does this look like practically? Of late, in the middle of each week, on Wednesday, I will take 15 minutes to sit and just look at what’s gone on over the past week.
- What went
well
- What didn’t
Sounds simple, but when you do it regularly you start to realise the power of pausing and just being aware of what’s happening around you.
Because when you’re working, you might end up serving other people’s interests, miss your own, and feel very upset after it.
Just pause now.
1 talk
Sometimes it isn’t about rushing to be more productive, but pausing.
Sometimes it isn’t about doing more things, but the right things.
1 tip
Let’s pause now for a moment.
And look at the things that actually allow us to pause.
Even the way you’re looking at this
email.
Are you tempted to skip past,
into the next notification that’s jumping into your screen? Or to click past, because it’s not exciting enough, and seems like it’s all text?
Maybe next time, use something that allows greater focus, and that slices your attention less. Like a laptop rather than a phone.
P.S. Think this could help someone? Share this link with them.
